Has ONE Championship Ruined Muay Thai?
You can support the channel and access extra breakdowns and tutorials via Patreon here: www.patreon.com/prostriking
One championship Muay Thai has pretty much become it’s own sport. When compared with traditional Muay Thai it is it’s own beast. Shorter rounds, smaller gloves, a different scoring criteria favoring aggression meaning fights are fought at a faster pace and there are more knockouts. So “what’s the problem?” you might be thinking. Let’s take a closer look at why the Muay Thai purists may have an issue with the ONE Muay Thai rules format.

I started watching UFC way back on VHS when it was still in the single digits... when DJ went over to ONE I started to watch and that's where I was introduced to their version of Muay Thai. I never really considered Ones version traditional Muay Thai, tho I felt they did a good job at keeping a homage to traditional Muay Thai, while streamlining and adapting Muay Thai to a more global market. without ONE I never would have started watching Muay Thai or kicking boxing as much as I do now.

The gloves are most definitely fun, but they need to let the clinch go more. Also the fight being scored as a whole is much better... you go to stadiums in Thailand and watch two people shuffle and taunt for the entire 5th round... or one fighter just stop punishing someone with a minute left in the 4th because the fight is considered over and both sets of coaches start shouting "PAW PAW"... it's very tedious as a spectator.

Growing up in Southeast Asia and getting into Muay Thai (Thai boxing as we used to call it) in the late 70s through early 80s before moving to the US, I had the chance to see the golden era of MT and part of me love the ritualistic and artistic aspect of MT. Still, deep down, we all know that for MT to grow globally, it has to evolve, and as people from all over the world started to train in MT, the innovative contribution is bound to happen. No difference in how languages continue to evolve and grow. And it is a good thing.

Muay Thai, should be free to use all 8 limbs, to show the real performance and the arts of MuayThai. We use to have the clinch master, like DieselNoi LuangSuan and PanomTuanLek. Now these clinch masters cannot utilized all technique with the new rule and these technique will be extincted. At least 3-4 knees should be allowed.

I started seeing alot of Stadium Muay Thai. Previously i watched alot of UFC, but got bored with it. Always was fascinated with Muay Thai. I think ONE led me to RWS, which led me to Stadium Fights. I have started to like 5 rounds over RWS 3 rounds. But they still have many good fighters to watch.

Not at all. The gamblers did more harm to the sport than anyone. This is why guys who dominate their opponent with punches and kicks loses by getting swept a couple times. ONE saved muaythai from being boring even if it's not perfect yet, brought back distinct styles of muaythai, allowing new foreign styles to shine and all that's left is the clinch. Gamblers took away our Somrak Khamsing and our Samart Payakarun but these styles are slowly coming back

I wouldn't say ONE ruined muay thai, it still showcases (even though limited by ruleset) the effectiveness and lethality of the art. While i do expect to see negative outcomes because of the smaller gloves and brawl heavy styles, it does give a lot of thais more of an opportunity to change their lives. It also puts muay thai on a global stage where UFC fighters are opting in to train in Thailand more often as well as putting pressure on traditional circuits like RWS to do more for the fighters that choose to stay there.

Some people say he has pillow hands and Wikipedia (no, not a great source) says that his defensive stance doesn’t allow his shots to deliver full power. He also wasn’t able to knock down Sneako, and though I’d like to think he wasn’t trying to, it looked like he was

It's ruined it in the sense that the culture and essence along with skills are watered down due to scoring aggressively forward motion. Also it's not as honest as the stadium circuit, one helps the fighters it wants to promote So it doesn't necessarily help fighters make more money I personally know one fighters making chump change and they have a huge roster. Fighters are set up for unfavorable match ups to promote other fighters everyone can see that. If they didn't ask the fighters to fight like Sloppy bulls which is what thais call it it'd be great. Muay femur and technical fighters are punished for being slick and have to make it easier for others. A complete revamp and keeping the scoring system of real muay thai is better. I expect the thai to eventually realize they're being used to promote foreigner fighters who half the time are weight bully's to eventually return back to stadium and more promotion like rws popping up. One is perfect for casuals though. People who think rodtang who is great but was very average on the stadium circuit who's style cannot beat a technical guy unless you punish them for defensive prowess.

May Thai has always seemed very niche, to me... almost esoteric since it has such a small but rabid fan base. Traditional Muay Thai in Thailand seems like a combination of all pro sports in the U.S. when it cones to popularity, and I understand that purists will find the traditional sport being watered down and too similar to MMA or Lethwai. I take it, whether for good or for bad, as an evolution that takes Muay Thai to an international audience. The explosion and popularity of MMA is going to make other sports more aligned with its style. The rule changes are to make it more exciting and easier to understand for most people. Unfortunately, money changes everything.

The answer is yes. ONE is a sinking ship held up solely by foreign investors. They make no money despite their popularity and while they pay well, the win/KO bonus scheme is incredibly predatory, basically 80k/350k. Big gyms like P.K.Saenchai no longer let their 4oz fighters fight in stadium, so on a loss in ONE, 4 months away from their next fight, they are living on less than 30k baht in between fights (Pumjaithai talked about this and that he had to get a part time job). Fighters who are not built for brawls get knocked out and are not invited back, they come back to the stadium scene demoralised and put on much worse performances (Petnamchai for example). This is a bubble, when it eventually bursts, the Muay Thai scene in Thailand will be even worse off than what happened after covid. Punches are also not scored less in traditional, this is a myth. If you can push someone around, snap someone's head back it scores as much as any other strike that does the same.

They watered it down stripped all the culture of it & made it "western friendly" so that it will be more well recived among mma fans riding off the popularity of the ufc the only thing I enjoy is the fact that they get paid more & have smaller gloves because it emulates a real fight better but one & the west miss out on some of the greatest Thai fighters of today, imagine telling a prime floyd mayweather to do 3 rounds only with mma gloves it would kill his whole style he might not even want to participate everything like smaller rounds & no clinching kills the whole point of Thai boxing its just a 9 minute hardcore kickboxing match with heavy elbows & a few knees / trips snuck in their actual skilled fighters will be replace with a bunch of wild big dumb roided out sluggers Muay Mut fighters are pretty much going to run the show & all the other Thai styles will be deemed irrelevant if nothing changes I'd rather they just learn some grappling join the ufc & fight full on mma than to see them limit their skills so much I enjoy it but they are leaving alot on the table
